Mykonos beaches: From the most peaceful to the most lively
Famous for its white houses overlooking a wide bay and the characteristic windmills, the island has become a very wordly tourist destination. Although it is considered the most commercial of the Greek islands, full of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and tourist places, Mykonos preserves picturesque corners, like the alleys full of flowers among the white houses and the characteristic taverns with blue wooden chairs overlooking the sea. The beaches, are beautiful and here we want to tell you which ones we think are the most beautiful.
The summer season in Mykonos starts early, thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate of this island located in the heart of the Aegean Sea. Already after Easter, tourists come here, attracted by the beauty of the island and its sea. Its most beautiful beaches are found mainly in the southern part of the island.
This is the most famous and popular beach of Mykonos. Here you will find a very fine golden sand and turquoise-emerald waters, and above all lots of fun. On Paradise Beach, there are many bars, restaurants and nightclubs. Here is a party all day, at all hours, with music from international DJs. The party comes alive at sunset with aperitif time parties and continues until late at night. Dancing and cocktails are the hallmark of this place, suitable only for those who love fun and chaos. The beauty of this beach, however, is the cosmopolitan environment, with young people from all over the world. Some parts of the beach are free and some have swimming facilities. Because of its popularity it is very difficult to find a place. Paradise Beach offers numerous water sports. The beach is located south of Mykonos, less than 5 km from the capital of Chora.
Super Paradise Beach
Near Paradise, in a smaller bay to the east, is Super Paradise. A shorter but wider beach with beach clubs and beach bars. Here too there are trendy bars and nightclubs with music all day long. The sand is soft and the water is crystal clear. The parties make it one of the most animated beaches of Mykonos. An area frequented by gays and nudists. Super Paradise Beach can be reached by sea or by land, through a paved but steep road.
The Mykonos Elija Beach, located a few kilometers east of Superparadise, is probably the most beautiful and longest beach on the island. It is a vast expanse of golden sand divided in half by a rocky bank and protected by green vegetation. The sea is transparent and emerald-coloured and you can find peace and tranquility. The beach is equipped and offers bars and restaurants. In some areas it is possible to practice nudism. The beach is about 12 kilometers from Mykonos town on the south side of the island.
Kalo Livadi Beach is flanked by a beautiful cultivated valley and is located about 11 km from Mykonos Town, on the south side of Elia beach. The coastline is made up of very fine golden sand and the sea on which the beach faces is transparent and emerald. The beach is very long, wide and spectacular, well equipped and offers bars and restaurants.
Mykonos Agrari Beach is located on the southern coast of the island, about 10 kilometers from Mykonos town. It is very close to the famous Elia, which can easily be reached on foot, but less known and thus quieter. The beach is characterized by a coastline of light sand with medium grains, bathed by a transparent, turquoise and crystalline sea. The beach, often frequented by nudists, is equipped and offers a nice restaurant, a bar and a center of nautical activities. To reach it, as for many other beaches on the island, you have to follow a very steep and impervious road in certain sections.
Mykonos Ornos Beach is located in front of a small fishing village, about 2.5 kilometers south of Mykonos town. The beach is characterized by a fine and clear sand and is bathed by a beautiful transparent and crystalline sea. Recently it has developed a lot with the opening of shops, bars and restaurants and is often overcrowded. The beach also offers water sports equipment, from water skiing to wind surfing. It can also be easily reached by buses, which frequently leave the capital.
Paraga beach is equally famous, especially for being the meeting place of the hippies. In Paraga the beach is divided into two half-moons by a cliff, a quieter and the other more animated and worldly, with bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There is also a camping area. The beach is located southeast of the island of Mykonos, to the left of Paradise Beach and its access road is a side street of the one that goes to Paradise.
Kalafatis beach is located in the south-eastern part of Mykonos, overlooking a bay with soft golden sand and deep blue water. Here lovers of windsurfing meet, with structures that organize courses and rent sailboards. Here the area is wilder, but is populated with hotels, restaurants and accommodation. To get to Kalafatis, take the road that leads from Ano Mera in a south-easterly direction.
South of Kalafatis is the small beach of Agia Anna, equipped with swimmimg facilities. It is a more intimate and collected place, ideal for relaxation. The beach is separated from Kalafatis by a narrow path, at the end of which opens a small promontory where we find the village of Divounia, with typical white houses and taverns overlooking the sea.
Platis Gialos beach is a strip of sand surrounded by rock and white houses, between villas and hotels. It is a well equipped beach for swimming and is usually frequented by families. It is located above Paranga, in the western part of Mykonos. A pretty beach, with transparent water and intense turquoise color, but very crowded.
Mykonos Psarou Beach is located about 5 kilometers from Mykonos town and is often frequented by famous people. The beach is not very large and has a coastline of fine golden sand, bathed by a transparent, turquoise and crystalline sea. The beach is quiet, silent and elegant. Psarou is also well equipped, offers bars and restaurants, is reached by buses and is close to that of Platis Gialos.
Here we are on the opposite side of the island from the beaches seen so far. Panormos opens on the homonymous bay of the northern coast of Mykonos. It is a less frequented place than the southern beaches, but just as beautiful, if not more, thanks to the wide spaces, the tranquility and the wild landscape. Behind the beach is the natural area and the Marathi basin. Also in Panormos there are equipped swimming establishments.
Also in the northern part of the island, above Panormos, overlooking the protected bay itself, we find the beach of Agio Sostis. Here too we find a wild area, with a free beach surrounded by vegetation. However it is becoming a beach more and more frequented by tourists. In the area there is the famous Vassilis restaurant, where you can taste excellent traditional Greek cuisine.
