Sightseeing in Mykonos

ronny presenteThe capitol of the island of Mykonos, Chora (also known with the name of Hora) has many tourist attractions. Unlike the other ports of the island, Chora-Mykons is on a high ground. Its bay is divided among the fishermen, with their small boats, and crowded main port. The best way to visit the town is on foot (cars are almost forbidden). Countless bars, restaurants and night clubs, artisan shops and jewellers. Do not miss the archeological museum, ‘little Venice’ and the beautiful church of Panagia Paraportiani. The colors that prevail are the white walls, the blue painted doors and windows and the flowery balconies. (photo credits: R. Presente)

The Greek flag

greg adamsThe patterns and colors of the Greek flag have changed several times since the Hellenic Revolution in 1821. The nine white and blue stripes represent the number of syllables in the phrase “Eleftheria i Thanatos”, ie Freedom or Death, the motto of the Hellenic Revolution against the Empire Ottoman after 400 years of Turkish domination. According to others stripes were also chosen to symbolize the waves of the Greek sea moved by the wind. The white cross on a blue background symbolizes the devotion of the Greek Orthodox Christian Church, symbol of the unity of the nation who did so much for the national cause at the time of Turkish rule, preserving the language and traditions from any influence. History of Mykonos

According to mythology the god Zeus killed the greek sea giants, which turned into stone creating the island of Mykonos. The island for long time represented an important market due to neighbouring island of Delos. The romans ruled the island and Greece from 146 B.C. From 1200 the island was dominated by the venetians, and later by the Catalans, pirates and turks. The turistic boom started in the 50’s and today is one of the most exclusive turistic destinations in the world, always improving the service offered to its visitors. (Photo credits: mykonosgold)
